Este drama de Almodóvar mostra como muitas vidas mudam por causa de um único tiro. Começando em 1970, quando uma prostituta (Penélope Cruz) dá a luz seu filho Victor, a história salta para uma Madri contemporânea. É em cima de Victor Plaza que tudo se desenvolve, quando este se envolve numa confusão na casa de Elena (Francesca Néri), a quem conhecera dias antes. A polícia aparece por lá, um revólver dispara acidentalmente e Victor amarga sete anos na cadeia, onde arma a mais doce das vinganças. Culpa, arrependimento e redenção num thriller sensualíssimo. Adaptado do livro de Ruth Rendell, este é o único filme de Almodóvar que não é baseado em obras do próprio diretor.
"O diretor espanhol Pedro Almodóvar sempre foi um grande cineasta, um criador, mas tecnicamente deixava sempre um pouco a desejar. Agora, com esta fita, ele finalmente se torna um autêntico diretor de cinema. Sabe cortar, movimentar a câmera, utiliza a trilha musical como ninguém. Continua a fazer filmes pessoais, mas ao mesmo tempo consegue nos comover, tocar nosso coração. Sem medo de chegar ao melodrama.
Deixando de lado desta vez os atores com que estava acostumado a trabalhar, Pedro fez um filme magnífico e sério, sem cair em sátira ou paródias. Javier Bardem faz um famoso jogador de basquete que ficou paralítico e agora se movimenta apenas numa cadeira de rodas. Mas a figura central é um outro rapaz filho de uma prostituta que nasceu a caminho do hospital em pleno ônibus. Teve uma vida difícil, foi parar no reformatório, mas agora saiu para encontrar o caminho certo. E acaba tendo um romance com a mulher do paralítico.
Mas estou simplificando as coisas. O filme é cheio de redemoinhos narrativos, como na vida há coincidências e momentos inusitados, bastante violência, algumas cenas de sexo bastante ousadas. O fundamental é que o grande diretor conduz a história de lance a lance, encestando sempre. Este é um dos melhores filmes e a obra-prima do maior cineasta da Espanha." (Rubens Ewald Filho)
